Bettor's preview of Wells Fargo Championship
Wells Fargo Championship is the next stop on the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour. The event, carrying a purse of $6.5-million, is taking place at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte with a share of $1,152,000 allocated for
the winner.
The tournament is the 20th event on the tour and it is about to hit the toughest of the venues on PGA Tour. According to the stats, Quail Hollow Club was ranked the 19th in difficulty out of 51 courses and only
last season, it was tagged as the second most difficult of the courses in United States. It is the last three holes of the course, where the game can be conquered or lost.
Wells Fargo Bank is the title sponsor for the event, as the name suggests. Earlier, Wachovia Bank was the sponsor, but after the takeover by Wells Fargo Bank, the title name was ought to go away as well.
Sponsor or no sponsor, it is the course layout and its resemblance with the venue where the Players Championship will be held that attracts the finest of the field to North Carolina. Moreover, the event is taking place one week before
the Players Championship, which is the fifth flagship event on the tour.
By competing in the tournament, the players will gear up for the Players Championship, which takes place on one of the most severe courses of United States. In pursuit of practicing on a similar course, most of the top guns of the
golf world will come to the greens of Quail Hollow Club.
Included in the field is the world number two Martin Kaymer, who recently stepped down from the highest throne in the world and is bidding to take it back. The player is not much of a delight to watch on the American courses, as his
performance suggests. Despite that, a huge number of spectators are expected at the course to watch Kaymer tee off.
Second name in the field is that of the world number four Phil Mickelson. The American refers Quail Hollow as one of his favourite stops and why should he not? After all, he has a history of carding some of the lowest numbers on the
course. He nearly won the tournament last year, if it weren’t for Rory McIlroy, who won it with a margin of four strokes. Moreover, the American is coming to the course after a gap of three weeks and hopefully, it will work in his favour, as he has never missed
the cut over there.
Rory McIlroy, the winner of last year’s event is yet another powerful name in the field. The Northern Irishman was brilliant last year with his accurate short game at the course, which was the prerequisite of winning there. Once again,
the 22-year-old is carrying a killing form with a top three finish in the May Bank Malaysian Open, which took place a week back.
Winner of the Zurich Classic, Bubba Watson is also inclined to set his marks on the trophy of Wells Fargo Championship, before the Players Championship arrives. The American is the longest hitter on the Tour with the highest accuracy
and he is all set to use it on the course, where he finished 22nd last year and second in 2009.
