Bettor.com's picks for the Players Championship
The 37th edition of the Player Championship is about to hit the par-72 TPC Sawgrass on May 12. The Professional Golf Association (PGA) event is carrying a purse of $9.5-million and 600 FedEx points.
Who will win the huge prize along with a jump in the rankings? Here is a look at bettor.com’s picks for the tournament, based on familiarity with the course, past performance in the tournament and recent stats.
Luke Donald
The Englishman is one of the best players coming to the venue. He is superb in scrambling and accurate in finding the fairways, which makes him suitable for the course.
Tiger Woods
The former world number one has never missed the cut on this course. He has eight Top-30 finishes in his last nine events, which means that there are fair chances of him finishing in the top. Moreover, he finished fourth at the Masters
at the Augusta National, a course known for the most challenging greens.
If Woods manages to replicate a similar performance here at TPC Sawgrass, then he is certain to finish in the Top-10. Apart from all the above reasons, he has won here in 2001, which means he has a fair familiarity of the course.
Phil Mickelson
The American won the tournament in 2007 with his excellent putting, and with the kind of short game he has been carrying in this season, chances are that he will lift another trophy. Moreover, he had four Top-10 finishes in the start
of the season, which includes a victory at the Shell Houston Open.
Matt Kuchar
The American has been coming to the course quite often. Kuchar finished 27th in the Masters and 21st at the Heritage, which means that he is improving and there is a fair chance that the player will finish in
the Top-10. Also, in his last two visits to the course, Kuchar has finished in the Top-15 both times.
Adam Scott
The Aussie won the Players Championship seven years back, when he was still a rookie. He followed it with two Top-10 finishes. After finishing second at the Masters, Scott has become one of the finest players around and with a great
long putter and excellent scrambling. Scott is the man to watch out for on Sunday.
Sergio Garcia
The Spaniard won the tournament in 2008 and is regaining the form which he once carried. Garcia has not missed the cut in any of the four events, in which he competed this year.
Bill Haas
The player finished 18th in driving stats and ninth in Green Hits in Regulation, which infers that he is one of the most powerful players on the field. Moreover, he finished in the fourth place last week, a clear indication of the
great run he's having.
