Pat Buckley’s Newlawn Class has been given a plum draw for the opening race of the night, Droopys Kentucky and Honey Trampas were away very slowly in their heats and Buckley’s charge should get to the first bend with the advantage. However the current favourite for the Derby crown only scraped through his heat in a disappointing performance when given a clear run so it may be profitable to side with YORKSHIRE STAR. The selection ran a cracker behind Greenwell Viper in his heat and can make all here from trap six. Ardera Monarch came through early crowding in his heat and can improve his time to snatch the final qualifying spot.

Heat two
T1 – Nambisco, T2 – Killeford Fire, T3 – Wilfy Wells, T4 – N/R, T5 – Greenwell Viper, T6 – Westmead Scolari
Only five line up in heat two as Ardkill Tunoco has been withdrawn due to injury, which can pave the way for WILFY WELLS to cause a huge upset. The 10-1 shot was very quickly away in the heats and is a reliable sort for trapping out well, which is a huge advantage in a competitive race. Despite Greenwell River running a storming time in the heats, the selection’s time (after going calculations) was two tenths of a second faster, which makes the 10-1 price look far too big. Westmead Scolari got up to beat Wilfy Wells in the heats and shouldn’t be too far away once again, but it may prove to be profitable to side with trap three.

Charlie Lister has seen two of his main hopes for the Derby crash out already, and his chances now lie with TYRUR SPEEDY (nap). The selection won his heat comfortably and has been drawn into the slowest heat of the night, so if he breaks from the traps in contention at the first bend his speed down the back straight should see him draw clear. Westmead Bond only managed third in his competitive heat but ran a cracking time, which makes him the only real danger to Lister’s runner. Ardmayle Courier gets the nod for the open third place spot.

Heat four
T1 – Ardkill Ernie, T2 – Beaming Dilemma, T3 – Hill Tipoki, T4 – Ballymac Rebound, T5 – Blood of Kings, T6 – Final Washington.
Final Washington is considerably overpriced in the final race of the night, 10-1 for a dog that ran a trial of 29.27 a week ago is ludicrous. But he may find one just too good here as inside him in trap five is BLOOD OF KINGS. The fast-starting selection has plenty of Shawfield experience, and should out-trap Final Washington to secure the lead. There seems to be a lot of early pace from the inside traps which could cause crowding at the first bend, and this could result in either wide runner given the freedom to dominate round the outside. Ballymac Rebound is another one that has to enter the calculations from a good draw in trap four.
