Bettor.com greyhound racing tips: who will land the Sussex Cup at Hove

The Coral Sussex Cup will be getting underway at Brighton and Hove greyhound stadium on Thursday.

The category one competition promises to put on an entertaining show for its crowd with a strong line-up of 36 hopefuls attempting to claim the £10,000 prize.

Fans and punters will be gathered around the betting ring at Hove on the night trying to make a wager, but backing a dog in the ante-post market could prove more beneficial.

The ante-post market generally tends to provide better value, and to help with a selection, we have picked out five potential dogs we believe may be worth following.

There is obviously no guaranteed way of finding winners but, for a newcomer to greyhound racing, the task must seem quite daunting. Six greyhounds may all seem the same to the novice but there are many factors to take into consideration before risking any hard-earned money.

Ballymac William (7-2 favourite)

The five main points to base any selection on should be class, current form, early speed, trap draw and, above all, value for money.

Carly Philpott’s charge possesses all five going into tomorrow’s heats and as a result has been installed as the clear favourite to win the trophy. William remains unbeaten at Hove and although people are concerned his form is due to dip, I wouldn’t put anyone off backing him.

If he can continue to produce great early pace from the traps, you might be onto a winner and won’t get much better odds at a later stage.

William was also the winner of last month’s £5,000 Coral Olympic at Hove over 515m, which should provide some extra comfort to any backer.

Borna Rocker (14-1)

Borna Rocker produced a track time of 29.63sec to claim last week's Tithe Barn Trophy at Hove which saw him being installed as the second-favourite in the markets.

The Chris Lund-trained dog may not be as experienced as William but has developed exceptionally fast on the track and delivers performances with great use of pace on his day.

The seeded mid-runner has to date run only five races, of which he has won three. Early pace will be the key for him and with the draw he's been given for Thursday, I can certainly see him progressing and reaching the final six.

Farloe Titan (16-1)

This year’s Betfair Arc winner is one of the most experienced runners among the pack of 36. Farloe Titan has run a total of 30 races to date, and is a greyhound who can dip in form from time to time.

His best time across the 515m at Hove is 29.68secs, a time which shows that he is capable of competing with the best.

The Paul Sallis-trained charge goes into a comfortable draw tomorrow night and you should expect something either extraordinary or a big disappointment, but he should prevail to the semi-finals.

Bower Hawk (20-1)

Bower Hawk will be attempting to establish his mark among the big boys after a notably impressive record in all the puppy events he's competed in.

Hawk took his record to six wins in eight starts with a victory in the final of the Worthingtons Dual Distance final over 500m at Nottingham last week, and is another who is showing great form.

Trainer Pat Rosney has entered five greyhounds for the competition, but Hawk is one you can find value in - the suited mid-trap runner will be in the same heat as the favourite on Thursday night, a race which should keep the odds compilers busy if he wins.

A price of 20-1 is a great for Hawk to win the competition, odds which are bound to be shortened if he beats William.

Bettor Dot Com (33-1)

Any fan that follows the racing would be aware that things don’t always unfold the way you would hope at times.

A prime example being Toomaline Jack who boomed in the recent English Derby and Grand National heats, only to slump on finals’ night.

Sometimes the results of a race can come down to class, sometimes it's luck, but sometimes it’s only a matter of spotting a new rising star. Bettor Dot Com is no stranger to the track at Hove, but is slightly inexperienced compared to many of his rivals.

The Tony Lucas-trained charge has won two of three at Hove with a best time of 29.96sec. The Guildford-based trainer is in full belief that this youngster will keep on improving and at 33-1 I think he's worth a few quid.
