Bettor.com's Premier League Team of the Week 18-24 October 2010
Another weekend of surprise results, stunning strikes and bizarre goals came to a conclusion with the clash of the weekend between Manchester City and Arsenal ending at a surprise 3-0 score line in favour of the away side.
Meanwhile, Liverpool finally returned to winning ways against Blackburn at Anfield. Chelsea yet again register a routine win against an impressive Wolves side while Xavier Hernandez inspired Manchester United struggled on their way to a 2-1 away win at the
Britannia Stadium against Stoke City.
With game week 9 coming to an end where 10 matches produced 24 goals, Bettor.com has come up with a team of the weekend for our viewers.
Here is our TOTW (Team of The Week):
Formation: 4-4-2
Goalkeeper - Lukasz Fabianski (Arsenal)
Arsenal overcame Manchester City in a convincing display upfront, but they have to thank their goal keeper who kept them in the game, with an unlike Arsenal goalkeeper performance.
The young stopper made some crucial saves and put in great shift and a mature display. He now has given Arsene Wenger food for thought and has done no harm to his chances of staying no.1 once Manuel Almunia returns to full fitness.
Right-back – Jose Bosingwa (Chelsea)
The Portuguese was starting his first game in 13 months and didn’t seem one bit as if he has been out for so long. Brilliant overlapping runs and a couple of neat one-twos with Drogba almost led to a goal on his return.
Defensively, he was sound and looked assured when in possession. It’s great news for Chelsea fans who probably would feel that they have the two best fullbacks in the country, now that Bosingwa has returned to full fitness.
Centre-back - Sotirios Kyrgiakos (Liverpool)
One of few positives in Liverpool's season so far has been the ever improving form of Greek defender. Sotirios was a threat at every corner and thumped in a powerful header to give Liverpool the lead.
He hardly put a foot wrong when in his own half. A promising display indeed.
Centre-back - Titus Bramble (Sunderland)
Yes, Mr. Titus Bramble makes our team of the week. Fans have been sceptical of his ability where ever he has been, but the big defender has repaid the faith Steve Bruce showed in him when he signed him from Wigan this summer.
Bramble was like a wall and was the main reason behind Sunderland’s clean sheet.
Left-back - Leighton Baines (Everton)
Ashley Cole would be the general choice week in week out for the team of the week, but Leighton Baines' stunning free kick which earned Everton a point at white Hart Lane meant that he edged out Cole for the left back spot.
He otherwise looked assured and gave Everton an outlet on the left side and used the ball well.
Attacking-midfield right - Samir Nasri (Arsenal)
Samir Nasri has really come of age since his stunning goal in the Champions League last season. He continues to inspire Arsenal by popping up with crucial strikes and he was on target yet again with a great finish.
Nasri has now scored 7 goals in his last seven matches. He also set up Nicklas Bendtner's goal with a beautifully weighted through ball, which killed the game off.
Centre-midfield - Alex Song (Arsenal)
The third Arsenal player to make this week’s team of the week. Alex song is always susceptible to yellow cards and was lucky not to have been sent off for a second bookable offence.
Apart from that, the Cameroon International dominated against the 10 men City and took his chance brilliantly to give his side a two goal cushion.
Centre-midfield – Kevin Nolan (Newcastle United)
The former Bolton skipper was the best player in the championship last season and was back to his best against West Ham. He scored his side's all important equalizing goal and was instrumental throughout the game.
Newcastle fans would like to see more of the same from their star man.
Attacking-midfield left - Chris Brunt (West Brom)
He has been a revelation this season; he looks a cut above the rest of his team mates. Classy on the ball always looking to play a killer pass and he is one of the main reason why West Brom are doing so well this season and it was no different against Fulham
at the weekend.
He was instrumental in both the goals and led his team to fourth spot only for 24 hours though.
Striker - Andy Carroll (Newcastle United)
The second Magpie to make it into our weekend’s line-up. Carroll was on song again after a week of off-field controversies.
The big centre forward caused the West Ham defence all sorts of problems and scored a header to take all three points for his team.
Striker - Javier Hernandez (Manchester United)
Wayne Rooney might just be thinking again of making an exit if this young man can keep up his form. A great improvisation led to his first goal of the game where he flicked the ball from the back of his head.
The striker than scored a late winner to hand United their first away win of the season.
Player of the Week: Samir Nasri
