Betty Heidler lives up to expectations at the German Championships in Kassel – Athletics news
On Saturday, July 23, while opening up the session of the first day of the German Championships, Betty Heidler, the 27-year-old German Hammer thrower, observed a new championships record of 76.04m.
The experienced thrower, who is always focused and determined to annihilate her rivals was all set to do something different in the competition, which was also aimed at picking up the most suitable athletes for the upcoming Daegu World Athletics Championships.
As Heidler opened up her session, it seemed that each of the throw she produced was aimed at marking her ultimate dominance over competitors. During the five rounds, opening up with 73.85m, she went on to build her total with hits like 75.02m, 73.08m, a
staggering 76.04m and a moderate one of 74.30m. Kathrin Klaas, the runner-up in the event, secured a good second position with her throw landing at the 72.39m mark.
Andrea Bunjes, the third finisher of the event, landed her throw at 64.95m. Commenting upon her success, Heidler, who is being considered among the strongest competitors for the Daegu event, said, “I am happy with my performance, though the series could
have been better. I had hoped for a couple of more throws beyond 75 – metre mark. Now I want to confirm my position at the favourite in Daegu.”
In the men’s corner, prominent performances were produced in disciplines like Long Jump and Shot Put. Among the jumpers, it was Sebastion Bayer who lived up to the expectations of his spectators. However, the strenuous struggler could only finalise his win
in his final attempt.
After having already prevailed in his discipline, he finished his game for marking an impressive 8.17m jump. The runner-up, Christian Reif, who also happens to be the European Champion, could only close his contest for a leap as long as 7.82m. The third
position in the event was bagged by Oliver Koenig, who put in effort of 7.79m.
Beyer, who is confident about overdoing his 8.20m, while commenting over his success, said, “It was at my last attempt when finally everything went well for me. Before my run-ups were not good. But generally it was not easy today because we had long breaks
during the competition.”
Reif, the second finisher of the event, while hinting towards the reason of his failure in the event, said that it was the strong wind that not only created problems for him in taking a safe start, but also hindered his way in emerging as an ultimate dominator
on the field.
The wind had nothing to do with the Shot Put event, where David Storl, who, while taking advantage of the absence of Ralf Bartels, marked a success in the meet quite easily. For securing the title in the event, Storl did an impressive job and the results
produced by him displayed a consistent and sustained performance, as his best throw landed at 20.35m.
