  1. Somanath is almost on the tropic of Cancer. From there if you start on a ship setting course due south & next landfall is Antarctic coast that on Indian Ocean is almost on the Antarctic circle. So, roughly the distance is a 'quadrant (90 degrees)' that translates to 5400 nautical miles (6210 st. miles or 9936 km). From this point South Pole is (as I stated already) is another 23.45 dgrees of arc that is 1407 nautical miles (1618 st.miles or 2605 km).


  2. Get a globe and a string to measure the distance, but in the meantime, what about all that land between the edge of the Antarctic continent and the south pole?
