  1. When you get a DSLR think about also Lens.Nikon camera Lenses have better range than any other cameras' in the market.Canon is of course good but trust me and my experiences. If i were you with my experience,i would't get either of these cameras. If you want your dreams come true get D300 Nikon. But if the money is an issue, get d80.My opinion is that, this camera is not that good anymore with recent technology,i mean got older and wait for the D90..Coming soon...I live in JAPAN...

  2. What you should do is go to a good camera store, and try out some cameras in your price range.   Handle them and ask questions of the salespeople.  You will know the right one for you when you see how easy it is to operate and use the controls.

On here, you are only getting people's opinions, and what is right for one person, may not be right for you.

  3. Get the Canon, because it's more advanced ( and they aren't in the same category by the way ) The canon eos 40d has a three inch live view screen, which the d80 doesn't have. The 40d's image quality is better, and it looks simply more professional. Also, this camera is a few hundred dollars more expensive, which makes it worth getting over the d80.

Read this comparison, for more on which one you should get.

I usually favor Nikon, but i have to give the gold to Canon on this one. The 40d is just a much better camera. If i had to choose, it get the 40d and the d80, HAHA, that's if i had the money

  4. Like AnswerMachine said the D90 will be out soon I heard this Wednesday, but time will tell. I don't know the specs. yet but I suspect that the sensor and image processor will be the same as the D300.

Personally I would get a Pentax or Olympus before a Canon.

  5. The 40D is in a higher class the the D80. The 40D is a semi pro camera while the D80 is an amateur camera in between the entry level models and the semi pro models. The 40D is better compared to the Nikon D200 or D300. That said as this is your first DSLR I would go and play around with them before you buy any of them. Also you may want to look at the entry level models like the Canon Rebel Xti or XSi or the Nikon D40 or D60. You are better off spending less money on the body and putting the extra money into lenses. The body will make almost no difference in image quality. The lenses however will make a huge difference. Lenses will also last dacades while your camera body will only last a few years before it is outdated.

  6. just don't blow anything up with the cannon

  7. have shot with Nikons since the mid 70's, only in the last couple of years going digital but still with Nikons. I feel they make an excellent product and have super customer support. I'd take exception to the comment that they are behind canon. Canon makes a good camera also but nikon and canon are major competitors with one getting slightly ahead for a bit then the other catching up and passing only to have it all happen over again. Right now with the D300, D700 and D3 I think Nikon has taken the lead. I am sure canon is working to reverse this as we speek. Both are good cameras

Nikon does offer products on many different levels so to be happy you have to decide what you want to be able to do and match the camera to those needs I will throw out a couple of other options

But I will throw out another option. You may want to look at a gently used D200 or D2. both of these cameras are rated for the mechanism in the hundreds of thousands; and with with the D300, D700 and D3 out you can find gently used models of these. That would give you more money to put into lenses, flash , tripod etc

I would hold off on a D80 only because the D90 is rumored to be out soon and if you really want a D80 you will probably be able to get it cheaper after that. The D80 is a wonderful camera.

You may also want to look at the D60. The D60 is a great entry level DSLR. It will let you have control over your shots to go with your skill level. Everything from a flexible program mode where the camera does many of the functions to a full manual mode where you set everything as you want it. It give good quality pictures. The D60 give you a number of things you want. It has newer firmware and image processors, designed for the 10 mp sensor. It has an "Active Dust Reduction System with Airflow Control ". Nikon not putting a system on the D40 to deal with dust is one of the biggest drawbacks I see to the D40 ( though I think its still a great camera for the money) If you change lenses dust will get in and the camera needs a system to deal with it. With the D60 you get a VR lens. That will help with low light situations ( they may offer that now with the D40 but originally it was not) . The D60 has Adaptive Dynamic Range. Nikon calls it "Active D-Lighting," it lets you save some highlights that my otherwise be lost. It has a newer better metering system than the D40.

It is a small camera as DSLR go and some people with larger hands do not like that so go and get one in your hands and play with the controls to see how it feels

go to kenrockwell.com and DPreview.com and read up then go and handle the cameras to see which you like best

  8. Definitely Nikon.

Just try it. I had a professional Canon and Nikon. I don't know why cannon is so overrated, but Nikon kicks ***.

I have a very useful review for you. Here you can read about and buy (if you like) a Nikon 40D which I strongly recommend:

  9. nikon, coz i have one and its madd!! lol

  10. The discussion will be endless because none of them is inferior to another. Every model from both the brands have its strengths and weaknesses. So it depends mainly on your budget, your purpose and your abilities to handle it. So look your self for a wide range and varieties.

  11. I can tell you as a semi professional photographer that rather than the Cannon 400d go for the 350 D even though the 400 came after the 350 is a far better camera I use it a lot with many different lenses but even for a starter like yourself i would certainly recommend the Cannon350D

  12. Here is a great website to do camera comparisons. The comparisons are extensive. Be sure and use the drop down navigation on the left of the screen.  I always choose Steve's Conclusion first then decide where to go for further details on the camera.  Once I've got my choices down to a couple I then go back to the drop down menu on the upper left of the screen and choose sample pictures.  Here are links to the two cameras you are looking at and a link to the main page so you can compare other cameras.
