  1. Of the 3, the best would be the bullmastiff.  They are the smaller of the 3, but they were bred for guarding livestock against poachers.

  2. mastiffs in my experience do not make good guard dogs unless trained for that purpose. usually very gentle dogs that are eager to make friends with anybody. but any dog will protect the people he loves and his home. even a poodle. sheer size makes this dog intimidating but does not mean he will be a good guard dog. if you want a dog bred for this purpose i would suggest a german shepard or a doberman.

  3. Please do not get a Mastiff of any kind if you only plan to use it as a guard dog.  There is a difference if your intention is to make it an integral part of the family, but also like the idea of a giant breed dog for security reasons.  If you have no intentions of training it to be a dedicated guard dog then I would say the English.  Otherwise, please consider investing in a security system, instead of a life that needs love, affection, and attention.

  4. We had an english mastiff who was very loyal and protective, (not to mention intimidating due to size), but she was not aggressive at all. As long as you socialize them well as pups and train them well, (don't wait to long b/c then the bigger they get the harder they are to handle. She was a gentle giant but her bark would scare any would be intruders. It's said that if a stranger comes into your home the english will stand between the intruder and the family until you tell her it is alright. Ours was like this. They do have a lot of health problems though and are preferred to be indoors with the family. Things to think about. Best of luck!

  5. I know a woman with an English mastiff (male) and she says she can't imagine a better guard dog- if he hears anything out of the ordinary, he investigates, and unlike some of the prey-driven type dogs like GSDs and Malinois, Mastiffs do not typically attack, she said hers (and most English mastiffs apparently) prefer to sit on the invader and pin him down until his owner arrives.
