Beyrick De Vries and Travis Logie emerge triumphant in Round 2 at Mr Price Pro Ballito
South Africa’s Beyrick De Vries and his fellow countryperson Travis Logie walked away with top honours from their respective Round 2 (Round of 48) heats at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito that continued at Willard
Beach in KwaDukuza, South Africa, on Thursday, July 5.
Portugal’s Tiago Pires finished just behind De Vries in the opening heat of Round 2 to accompany the winner into the next round (No-Loser Round of 24). Japan’s Masatoshi Ohno and Australia’s Stu Kennedy had to leave the competition field after rounding out
the bottom-two positions.
The second heat saw Brazil’s Tomas Hermes finish just behind Logie to secure his place in the next round as well. Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas and South Africa’s Chad Du Toit finished in third and fourth position respectively, which led to their elimination
from the contention for the event title.
With one-metre wave on offer at the primary event site, the stage seemed set for a series of exquisite performances and enthralling showdowns.
The local talent and event wild-card De Vries put on an impressive performance in the first heat of Round 2, making the correct choices to eventually register a heat-total of 13.50 points. The score held up until the end to seal the deal in his favour.
“I’ve never made it past the Round of 48 in a Prime,” said a glowing De Vries after his heat. “I promised myself that if I got into this event, I would try and surf like a free surfer and not get nervous ‘cos that’s when I normally lose. With the support
of my home crowd I felt completely relaxed and was able to find two of the best ramps I think I’ve ever had in Ballito.”
Pires successfully secured his place in the next round as well after finishing with a heat-total of 13.17 points. Ohno and Kennedy finished with a two-wave total of 10.97 and 10.96 points respectively, consequently getting ejected from the competition.
The second heat saw Logie clinch a convincing victory in the four-man battle to advance through into the next round. He apparently looked relaxed and in control throughout the course of the battle and eventually finished with a decisive heat-total of 15.20
points, which included a 7.33 and 7.83-point ride.
Hermes made the Round 2 cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 13.70 points. Dantas and Toit were forced to make a premature exit from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 11.50 and 8.33 points respectively.
