Bhupathi/Paes beat Devvarman/Huey 6-4, 7-5
Fourth seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes of India defeated Somdev Devvarman of India and Treat Conrad Huey of Philippines in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 in the third round of US Open at the Flushing Meadows in New York, USA on
Monday. The Indians took an hour and 32 minutes to oust their opponents.
Bhupathi and Paes took the lead straightaway, breaking the Indian/Filipino pair in the opening game of the first set and winning their following service game to grab a 2-0 lead. The Indian Express held all of their following service
games and maintained their lead till the end, serving out the set at 5-4. The right-handers kept their first serve percentage at 56 percent and won fourteen of the eighteen points on them in the opening set.
The Indian duo and Devvarman/Huey held their serve in the first ten games of the second set to tie the score at 5-5. Bhupathi and Paes drew the final blood as they broke the Indian/Filipino pair in the eleventh game and held their
serve in the next game to capture the set 7-5.
The veterans will face Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski of Poland in the quarterfinals.
Marrero/Seppi defeat Llodra/Zimonjic 7-6(4), 6-4
Spanish/Italian team of David Marrero and Andreas Seppi upset third seeds Michael Llodra of France and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-4 to book their place in the quarterfinals. The match lasted for an hour
and twenty minutes.
Marrero/Seppi and the French/Serbian pair did not lose their serve throughout the opening set, equalising the score at 6-6 and forcing a tie-break. The Spanish/Italian team hit a back-hand winner to capture an early mini-break
and consolidated on it to win the tie-break 7-4. Marrero and Seppi hit one ace and 57 percent of the first deliveries, bagging nineteen of the 23 first service points in the first set.
The Spanish/Italian combination and their opponents won their service games in the first half of the second set, squaring off the score at 3-3. Marrero and Seppi broke the French/Serbian pair in the seventh game and consolidated
on it to build a 5-3 lead. The unseeded team served out the set in the tenth game, claiming it 6-4. The Spanish/Italian duo saved the only break point they faced and capitalised on the one break point opportunity they created on Llodra and Zimonjic’s serve
in the second set.
Marrero and Seppi will take on ninth seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner in the quarterfinals.
