Bhupathi- Paes duo crashes out of the Thailand Open tennis tournament
The Indian tennis duo, Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes crashed out of the Thailand Open tennis tournament after being defeated at the hands of Daniel Brands and Ivan Dodigin in a three-setter clash in the opening round match on Thursday. The final match
score was 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 4-10.
As a result of this defeat the professional tennis duo from India suffered a rare loss together, as they made a surprising opening-round departure from the Thailand Open tennis tournament, the only ATP championship they contested together prior to the upcoming
Commonwealth Games, which are going to be held in New Delhi from Oct, 3rd.
The top seeds who entered this championship after a record twenty four victories in a row in the Davis Cup tennis competition, lost in a total of three sets at the hands of unseeded Daniel Brands from Germany and Ivan Dodig of Croatia in the opening round
of the USD 551,000 hard court tournament.
Having successfully managed to capture gold medals at the previous two editions of the Asian Games, Laender and Mahesh will be the hot favourite duo when the game of tennis makes its debut at the Commonwealth Games, starting from Sunday.
The tennis matches will start from October 4 and end on October 10. Laender Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi contest with different players on the ATP circuit, however, have always joined forces to represent India in multi-discipline sporting competition.
They have registered a couple of memorable victories in the Davis Cup tennis competition as well as the Grand Slam events; however, a medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing has always eluded the pair.
Laender is currently ranked number eight in the ATP doubles ranking, whereas the Indian achieved his highest doubles ranking world number one back in 1999 during the month of June. He has so far won a total of six doubles as well as six mixed doubles major
trophies so far in his career. Mahesh, on the other hand, is ranked number thirteen in the doubles ATP ranking and achieved his highest world doubles ranking of number one back in 1999 during the month of April. He has so far managed to capture a total of
eleven Grand Slam titles in his career.
The Indian fans, despite the duo’s early exit at the Thailand Open are definitely hoping for some good performances from both of them in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
