  1. It depends on the person, the personality, the environment, the situation, the type of bipolar, the severity of bipolarity, the episode, the use of medication.....  During a manic episode, some ppl with bipolar - not all by a long shot - can be controlling and/or manipulating.  What happens during mania can be hard to remember and perspective can be skewed.  In any other mood state, these characteristics are not part of the illness.  They are, however, common to borderline personality disorder which can look like bipolar or be a comorbid illness with bipolar, or just about a person's personality.

  2. after the fact, but they dont normally see it until it is too late.

I have manic episodes that arent too bad and then when they are over i look back and go "wow i was really irrational last month, i was doing everything on a whim too! i didnt realize how out of control my spending was, etc."

but i am on meds so when i get out of an episode i think more clearly than i can when i am in one. people who arent treated may not have these moments of clarity.

you could point it out to them, and if they dont also have another disorder barring them from caring, they should try to catch themselves doing it and try to stop.

  3. I think it depends on the person and the feelings they exhibit. My boyfriend is bipolar and he isn't controlling and manipulative. He's more angry/orny or very happy go lucky. I think the different kinds of meds the person is on affects them as well.

  4. Its mainly the anger issues that I have. Not controlling.

  5. I'd like to think they don't know and don't remember...it would make it easier to take being around one!  They sure can be hurtful, can't they?

  6. I don't think they realize the extent that they are being controlling or manipulative.  If they did, I don't think they would be the same.
