Bianca Buitendag and Coco Ho survive Round 2 of Vans US Open of Surfing – Surfing News
South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag and Hawaii’s Coco Ho successfully made it through into the third round at the Vans US Open of Surfing, sixth of eight stops on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Championship
Tour, after emerging triumphant in their respective Round 2 heats that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Wednesday, July 23, 2013.
Buitendag secured her place in the third round by getting the better of New Zealand’s Paige Hareb in the first heat of Round 2, thus bringing the event to a premature end for her rival.
Ho, on the other hand, finished on top of Australia’s Rebecca Woods in the second heat to make the Round 3 cut, eliminating the latter from the contention for the event title in the process.
Peaky two-to-four foot waves graced the main event site of the latest women’s elite tour event for the second consecutive day, thus promising to deliver a handful of exquisite performances during the course of the day once again.
After failing to make much of an impact during their Round 1 heats, both Buitendag and Hareb were naturally determined to make amends and keep themselves alive in the competition.
As their battle for survival got underway, the South African surfer got down to business without wasting any time. Locking her first business wave in the opening minutes of the heat, she posted a 7.50 on the scoreboard and soon
backed it up with another 7-point ride to eventually finish with a heat-total of 14.50 points.
Hareb seemed pretty much out of sorts and only managed to get to a heat-total of 8.33 points. The inadequate effort forced her to surrender victory and thus the Round 3 spot to her rival.
The second heat saw Ho locking horns with Woods. After a weak day one performance, both of them found themselves under immense pressure.
It turned out to be a real nail-biting affair. However once the dust settled, Ho stood victorious with a heat-total of 11.80 points, which comprised of a 6.00 and 5.80-point ride, against Wood’s two-wave total of 11.23 points.
