Bianca Buitendag and Erika Franco exhibit solid forms in Bréti Girls Pro Junior Quarter-finals
The South African surfer Bianca Buitendag continued to exhibit a solid form at Les Dunes in Brétignolles-sur-Mer, France, as she smoothly passed through the Quarter-final stage of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 1-Star Bréti Girls Pro Junior
on Tuesday, April 17.
She found herself facing France’s Joanne Defay, Lucie Milochau and Mathilde Gomez in the first Quarter-final. With the surfing conditions prevailing at the secondary venue of Les Dunes offering challenging waves, the South African surfer was clearly at odds
due to her unfamiliarity with the waves.
Much to the surprise of those who doubted or were yet unaware of the potential that Buitendag possessed, she adjusted exceptionally well to the conditions and put on a performance that kept her under the spotlight throughout the course of the battle. Displaying
her stylish skills on a couple of juicy waves that she had done well to lock, the South African surfer finished with a heat-total of 12.67 points. The score held up until the end to seal the fate of the first Quarter-final in her favour, consequently carrying
her through into the Semi-finals.
Defay was able to put smile of the faces of the local crowd after successfully advancing through into the next round of the competition by scoring a heat-total of 5.93 to claim runner-up place.
Milochau and Gomez succumbed to the testy conditions and therefore got eliminated from the competition.
The action continued at Les Dunes with the remaining Quarter-finals of the Bréti Girls Pro Junior. The second Quarter-final saw Basque County’s Leticia Canales Bilb prevail emerge triumphant to confirm her place in the next stage of the event, accompanied
by her compatriot Ariane Ochoa who took runner-up place with a two-wave total of 4.33 points.
Basque County’s Loiola Canales Bilba and Spain’s Ariane Ochoa got removed from the contention for the event title after rounding out the bottom-two positions with a heat-total of 1.13 and 0.93 points respectively.
France’s Maud Le Car and Spain’s Erika Franco successfully made it into the Semi-finals as well after claiming top honours in the third and fourth Quarter-final respectively. The French surfer finished with a heat-total of 10.00 points, whereas the Spaniard
scored a two-wave total of 13.50 points to claim victory.
The last-two Quarter-finals also sent France’s Josephine Costes and Spain’s Lucia Martino into the next stage of the competition, due to their second-place finish in their respective heats.
