Question:

Biarritz surf trip?

Trying to determine the best places to surf within 100 miles north or south of Biarritz. e.g. where to stay comfortably? is it cheaper to bring a surfboard or rent one there? what is the rental board selection like? are the locals friendly? is it better to rent a car or take trains? I've extensively checked online sources and have a few travel books -- hoping to get a response from someone who has done this. thx!

  1. I spent a month there camping in Seignosse on the municipal camping. It was pretty cheap! Seignosse is north of Biarritz, the next town north of Hossegor! I would rent a car though as you may want to move from one surf spot to another! I would take a 6 feet, 6.5 feet and a 7.10 one cos Guethary is a bit like Sunset! Be careful if you are a beginner, strong shorebreak, strong current - beach is paradise though and you can surf naked in some parts! Enjoy!

  2. I went to Capbreton last year. Go north and stay at "Chez Petit Jean". Its a camping ground with caravans and its always empty. About 100 euro/week in a caravan for 2.

    -Beautiful setting.

Good breaks around and rent a board there, real cheap and decent ones.

You'd want to rent a car, I had my own as i live in Switzerland so i don't know the cost. But you need to be mobile by your own means.

People are quite friendly i guess. Not very interested in tourists, they get a lot of em and mainly germans so they're not that crazy about them.

    But they leave you alone.

And there aren't so many surfers (around Capbreton). They're no good as its mainly tourists.

And the waves are good, but aim for march-april or sept-oct.
