Bible fans? What is the story of Jacob and how does it relate to the character Jacob in Water for Elephants?

I read and enjoyed the book, and I never saw any real parallels to Jacob's story in the Bible, even though I know the author says that she used it as inspiration.  The only things I can think of offhand, is that he talked about ladders (and there was a famous dream of Jacob's in the Bible with angels going up and down), and that he worked with animals to win the woman he loved (but the romantic story is completely different and unrelated to Jacob's love life in the Bible)

So hmm.

I've not read the book but have heard wonderful things about it.  Thanks for the reminder.

(It is about a man who grew up during the Depression and who worked for a circus.)
