  1. I know you can't judge one dog by another, but my best friend has a bichon frise and it pesters them all the time with its barking.  I think they regret getting it but they would never say so.  They paid big bucks for that dog.  They are beautiful little things and I am sure all of them are not that way..so go for it..esp. if you are adopting one from a shelter or rescue.

  2. i have a bichon, and just love her dearly.  i've had her 20 months now since she was 7 weeks old. she's very affectionate and playful.  she does bark a lot when there are people (visitors) at the door, but that's just her being a good guard dog. some say they're hard to train but i personally have not had problems training her, but i did take her to puppy classes.  i don't think it matters much whether you get a male or female in terms of temperament.  as to names, i'd go for french-sounding names as bichons are originally a french breed.  good luck!

  3. my mom has a female bf.  She is such a great dog, very loving affectionate and obedient.  Now there was a lot of training involved, but she is a great dog, good with very young kids ect.  I think you'd be making a good choice if you got 1!!!

  4. We had a Bichon for 7 years.  We found him stray and he had a lot of bad habits.  Nonetheless, the breed is generally considered to be especially friendly, easy to train and very agile.  They tend to perform excellently on obstacle courses if trained to do so.

They originate from the Canary Islands but were quickly brought to Europe by sailors and became the favorite pet to French royalty (thus the French name).  They were considered to be especially good companions and lap dogs.

Owners run into trouble because, if they get a puppy, they are just so darn cute they spoil them to death.  When they get older they can become very difficult because no discipline was instituted early on.  With patience,  however, they can be re-trained as they are very smart for a pure breed.

Note however, that this is a high maintenance dog.  They require a lot of grooming and often get "hot spots" which require treatment and that can get expensive.  If you don't want to pay for a lot of grooming you have to make sure to give your pet a thorough brushing everyday even if you leave their fur curly.  They must also be exercised and played with EVERYDAY.  They do demand a lot of attention.  They were bred for that -- as companion dogs.  Therefore, if you cannot spend a lot of time with a Bichon it is best not to get one or at least get two dogs (both don't have to be Bichons) so loneliness, anxiety and destructiveness is held at bay.  Also, please keep your Bichon indoors and put a sweater on your pet in the winter.

Our Bichon, Oscar, we the greatest pet we ever had.  He was moody and sometimes difficult but everything else about him made those things worth it.

By the way, if you get a male you MUST neuter or else he will urinate all over your house and could be aggressive toward other dogs.

  5. Bichons frise are generally nice, sweet tempered dogs.  I've seen a few nasty ones but only a few.  There are a whole lot of poodle (and other breeds) mixes being sold as Bichons frise, many of them have AKC papers.  These dogs are bred by people out to make a fast buck.  If you want a purebred dog, acquaint yourself thoroughly with what a Bichon frise looks like, even without all the hair because rescues and shelter dogs often have to be shaved down due to neglect.  The hair tangles very easily and requires daily brushing.  You will need a slicker brush to use with a pat-pull motion (any groomer can show you).  It often costs more to have a bichon groomed than a poodle because of all the scissoring.  Bichons need to be groomed once a month.  Many Bichons get a lot of brown staining under their eyes and on their feet.  Eye Envy and Angels' Eyes can take care of the staining.  White dogs in general seem to be more prone to flea bite and inhalant allergies.  All floppy eared dogs are more likely to get ear infections than dogs with erect ears.  Male or female, it's your choice.  Both sexes seem to have very nice temperaments.

  6. i have a 4 year old male bichon that is neutered and he was the hardest to potty train and very stubborn as well bichon are very sweet dogs if raised right . bichons are very stubborn it took my bichon sammy till he was fully potty trained till he was 2 years old and i got him at 3 months old. bichons are very sensitive to how you talk to them and espelly how you treat them. thay are high maintense in the grooming non shedding hypoallergenic and not to mention skin, intentional ear problems, and allergies as well.bichons are lazy couch potato's who will sleep all day if you let them.as far as the s*x it depends on you and personally of the dog each bichon is different.good luck.
