Question:

Bicycle Chain skips when going up a hill.?

I have a brand new road bike, and I recently changed the tube in the rear tire. Every time I put substantial pressure on the pedals (like going up a hill) and the rear derailer is in gear number 7 (the final gear) the chain will skip. This does not happen in any other gears, and the rear cassette and chain appear to fine through my novice eyes. Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

  1. I'm no expert, but in general, you're in too high of a gear if you have to put SUBSTANTIAL pressure while shifting uphill.  You should shift down considerably before you have to really push it, otherwise the chain will just skip right off.

I had the same problem with a new road bike last year, and the local bike repairman told me the same thing, and after a quick tune up (and following his instructions) I've been fine ever since.

If it's a new bike it needs especially close attention while you break it in.

  2. Make sure you wheel is fully seated in the frame axle slots. If it continues, then you are suffering from what is called "ghost shifting". It happens when, over time, your cables settle in, stretch a little and your cable housing wears. Your rear derailer moves out toward your smaller cogs. A bike mechanic can fix it in about thirty seconds.  If you are mechanically inclined, ask him or her to show you how its done so you can do it yourself in the future. This fix is easier than it seems and will happen occasionally over time.

  3. since it's new, the cable may still be stretching. It just needs a tune up, and most likely you can do that on your own by checking out videos on youtube that'll show you the way.

  4. Takes about 2 seconds - Turn the barrel adjuster on your rear derailleur about half a turn counter-clockwise. Test it out, if still skipping, repeat above.

  5. it's either dirty, un-oiled or your derailleur is not calibrated...

  6. doublecheck your rear wheel alignment. if that doesn't work, you're best off having a bike tech check your derailleur. my guess is your wheel is just a bit out of alignment..

  7. I don't think this is anything major; as mentioned, you new cables will stretch a little and your derailleurs will settle in a little from their use. After a 100km ride, I'll have to do some minor tune myself.

First, you will need to identify if the chain is skipping on the crankset or from the rear cassette. Most likely it will be the rear. In that case, you have to adjust the limiter screws and then tighten the cable using the barrel adjuster. It's a really simple procedure that takes approximately 10 minutes.
