Question:

Bicycle and Helmet Law - Toronto/Miss/Brampton?

I've read that anyone over 18 is not required by law to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle, is this true?

Also, can I bike on the sidewalk ( taking note that I am not going anywhere near DT and most of the sidewalks I can be on are always empty).

If I bike on the sidewalk/sometimes roads and follows the proper signal/changing without wearing a helmet, would I be breaking any other laws in Brampton/Toronto/Miss?

  1. Check your local laws. Some municipalities require helmets for 18 and under, some are 14 and under. But most prohibit riding on the sidewalk. Bicycles are classified as vehicles under the traffic code and must follow all traffic laws. Signalling, stop at red lights, etc.

PS.   Regardless of the helmet law, it's always a good idea to wear one.

  2. I'm not sure of laws in Toronto but I would think you should be able to contact your local advice bureaux for cycling laws.

There are sign posts for cyclist as for motorists, you will have to abide by these.  Some places you can ride on the same pavement or walking way as a pedestrian - however you must give way to pedestrians at all times.  Beware of runners who wear ear phones as they will not hear you coming.

I do not advise any cyclist or pedestrian to wear earphones when they are cycling or walking by a road as they cannot hear any warning sounds to danger, eg. hooting, bell ringing or shouting of other warnings that may be made to alert them.

Your local library may also provide some advice on cycling laws in your area.
