For my health, I must get 45 mins of cardio in at least 5 days a week. I am 29 yrs old. I can't join a gym because of finances, so I can either walk around my neighborhood or purchase a bicycle and ride it around. Which would be better and why? Mind you I also have plantar fasciitis in my right foot and it hurts if I'm on my feet too much.

  1. Biking, running, or walking are all excellent types of exercise. Consider doing a combination. Get a bike and go biking sometimes and walk other days. Make sure that whatever type of exercise you do, it's something you enjoy doing. Otherwise you'll have trouble keeping it up long term.

  2. I'd definitely say biking is a good idea.  You really aren't on your feet and it is low impact, so it would feel a lot better on your foot.  Plus, in my opinion, biking is so much more fun!  I think running would hurt your foot too much so biking is the way to go!

  3. I've been biking for a few years now, after rediscovering my childhood pasttime. It's really gotten me into much better shape. I actually own two bikes now, a road bike and a mountain bike, and I've joined a bike club. In addition to cycling, we also run and kayak. The running helps to maintain bone density since cycling is a low impact sport. I understand that would be difficult for you, so I'd definitely recommend cycling. I've lost 25 lbs over the last year and I'm finally at my optimum weight for my height and I'm in much better health. Good luck to you.

  4. it's a good idea for your calf muscles but not your arm muscles

  5. I have plantar fasciitis as well.  Cycling doesn't bother me at all.  Try to find a group to ride with - it is fun and healthy.  Be aware that bikes can be quite expensive.

  6. If you have the money to buy a stationary bicycle, then that is good. If not, a regular bike is great excercise. You will get much more out of a 45 minute bike ride than a 45 minute walk. Its a great way to get in shape even.
