Bicycle riders, has your helmet ever been useful?

have you ever crashed and be glad that you had a helmet (because it worked for good).

I'm trying bmx tricks and I just feel safe and don't see the need of a helmet at all (which I don't see as a good thing). I would like to ask others for reference and ask about previous experiences or knowlege in general.

  1. I've been in several bike accidents. If I wasn't wearing a helmet I would have suffered serious head injuries in at least one of them.

I never ride without a helmet. There's no reason not to.

  2. If you execute every stunt perfectly, and your equipment never fails, and noone ever unexpectedly gets in your way, then you don't need a helmet.

The world doesn't work that way.

Just last Saturday,  my front tire went flat in the middle of a turn.  I went down, banging my head on the curb.  Thanks to the helmet (now retired), I got up, fixed the flat, and rode home with nothing more than a little road rash.   Even if YOU never make a mistake, stuff happens.

  3. yes once i rode on a road going about 20 mph and my frout tire blow went over the handle bar and hit pavement head first busted my helment in one thousand pices boy was i glad i had on my helment that would have been my head

  4. Wear a helmet.

the one day i diddent wear a helmet i broke my collar bone...

it hurt loads and i dont want any of you to go through that pain. you cant move arm neck mouth without PAIN..

im a good bike rider too.

dont get bmx get a bike bmx are so small and pricy!!

  5. Absolutely, landed on my head as a kid (only used the front brake back then), had a friend crach his helmet in half on a rock, and my dad suffered a concussion mountain biking once, without the helmet he was wearing, he'd probably be dead right now.  Wear a helmet. Comfort and Style don't justify losing your life.

  6. WHAT IS THIS "HELMET" THAT YOU SPEAK OF?

                                                                hahahahaha!!

  7. Yessiree, bob.   About two weeks ago I was carving a loose sand corner on my mountain bike at speed and failed to negotiate it successfully (translation:  bike slid out from under me and I wiped out good).    First my wrist, then knee, then head hit the ground hard.   I was slightly dazed and if I hadnt been wearing a helmet, I'm sure I would have been knocked out or worse.

  8. I didn't,

however I know someone who crashed and a HUGE chunk came out of his helmet... so basically it saved his life.

  9. I don't like wearing a helmet either, but helmets saved my life when i crashed at 40 mph on a road bike and another where I smashed my head into a rock on a mountain bike ride.

If you ride a bike, you are going to crash, period. Since you are doing tricks, that puts you at greater risk. You don't want to be that one kid who everybody remembers for face planting on his bike then becoming a vegatable.

You should perpare for that if you don't wear a helmet. Why wouldn't you protect the most important organ in your body?

    I never ride without one.

    Buy one and wear it.

Keep it in the big ring.

  10. I almost got hit by a car once. The thing is I don't want to be in a position where I will say "I wish I had a helmet". I always wear one. I have heard too many stories of people just riding circles in their drive way to check something out and falling over, to only be in a coma.

  11. You must have a deathwish. I'd never get on my bike without a helmet. I know a girl that had to have serious reconstructive surgery on her face because she did a faceplant. If she'd been wearing a helmet her face would not have come in contact so closely with the pavement. The front rim of the helmet would have held her face just that much farther away from the ground.....

You can find some pretty interesting, fairly current bike accident statistics at the link listed below.....

  12. You WILL have an accident. Many of us already have.

I hit the side of a car, hit head on car window, bounced back and landed on my side - I'm not sure if I hit my head on the fall, but it sure as h**l protected my head on the impact with the car.

You'd be (literally) retarded not to wear a helmet, especially around moving boxes of steel.
