Bicycles or vehicles?? Pros and Cons for College students.?

Help me find out the more pros to biking for college students, over driving everywhere you need to go.

Colleges are usually set up so that you have what you need within a fairly short distance. When I was in college, i could get to the grocery store in five minutes in a car or seven minutes on a bike, and that was the most distant point I really needed to go to with any regularity.

As a student, i had no children (no one i needed to transport), so a bike was fine for moving my own self around. Parking was not an issue-- students with cars had to park in a central lot, that was so far from where most of us lived as to defeat the purpose. And you had to pay for your parking space.

The bicycle i ride now ( a schwinn) costs about what 2 full tanks of gas for my SUV cost ($140). as a college student, I couldn't afford the extra expenses of gas, maintenance, and

car insurance-- let alone the price of the vehicle itself. (bike maintenance is generally infrequent since there are fewer parts, and cheaper since the whole bike costs less than many car parts).

Plus I got a lot of excercise. Since i went to school full time and worked full time as well, there was no way i was going to get a lot of excercise any other way-- no time to go workout at the gymn. So riding kept me fit.

College-age people are also statistically more prone to have car wrecks than older drivers.

The main con was that if i wanted to go to another town on the weekends, I couldn't do it on the bike so easily. That could be a fairly big drawback for someone whose family lived out of town, but within driving range.

It really all depends on the college.  A lot of colleges are set up so that you don't need a car if you live on or near campus.  Mine was.
