Big 12 Volleyball tops NCAA ranking in 2011 – Volleyball news
The Big 12 Volleyball teams worked out great results in the 2011 season and climbed to the top slot in NCAA rankings.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) revealed the conference rankings on December 19, 2011 while Big 12 came out as the top conference program with most number of teams in the top 50. A total of nine teams played under the tag of Big 12 at
the 2011 NCAA Div I women’s volleyball tournament and finished off with following statistics:
2. Texas
3. Iowa State
19. Texas A&M
24. Kansas State
29. Oklahoma
37. Missouri
47. Kansas
49. Baylor
115. Texas Tech
Hence, eight out of nine teams of Big 12 Conference finished in the top 50 teams of the campaign. It marked the first time in the history that Big 12 this teams combined to finish first in the final standings of NCAA.
Previously, seven teams clawed their way to the top 50 in 2006. Earlier in 2001 and in 1998, the Big 12 finished second in the overall rankings of the NCAA women’s volleyball. This season, the Big 12 finished with 5 teams ranked in the top 30, while two
teams clawed their way to the top-3 of NCAA.
Texas - Longhorns
The women’s volleyball team of Texas University had an amazing run in the season. The longhorns played 31 matches in the 2011 season and dropped only five contests. Overall, they achieved the 26-5 mark whereas finished the conference play with 15-1 record.
They appeared in 15 home games and clinched success in all of them. Texas team actively participated in the NCAA tournament and played up till the quarter-final stage. They played their last match against UCLA, which won the NCAA title later on. However,
Longhorns managed to seize the second spot in overall rankings of NCAA.
Iowa State – Cyclones
The Cyclones followed the Texas Longhorns in the second position. They ended up with a win/loss ratio of 25-6, which also included 12-3 Big 12 record. They held third position on the 2011 NCAA national rankings.
Texas A&M
They also represented Big 12 conference and nationally settled for 19th position on the NCAA chart. Texas A&M finished with a record of 23-8 in the season and got hold of third spot in Big 12 ranking.
Kansas State - Wildcats
Under the command of brilliant coach, Suzie Fritz, the Wildcats of Kansas State did exceptionally well. They finished the season with an overall record of 22-11 and settled for 24th position in the NCAA national rankings.
Oklahoma
The Oklahoma squad had the similar record as Kansas State. They claimed 29thposition in NCAA rankings with a win/loss record of 21-12.
Missouri, Kansas, and Baylor
These three teams also represented Big 12 Conference and finished 37, 47 and 49, nationally. Texas Tech was the only team from Big 12, which could not find a position in top 50 teams.
