Big 12 announces all-time football team
Since its inception, the Big 12 Conference has seen many excellent football players go through the conference into the National Football League. On Wednesday 24 November, these players were honoured.
The big names that received honours included wide receiver Michael Crabtree, quarterback Vince Young, running backs Ricky Williams and Adrian Peterson, Darren Sproles, defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh, defensive backs Roy Williams and Terence Newman and top
coach Bob Stoops.
Michael Crabtree was wide out for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. In his two seasons with the school, he amassed 3127 yards on 231 receptions, averaging 13.5 yards per catch. He also scored 41 touchdowns during those two seasons before he got signed into the NFL.
He currently plays for the San Francisco 49ers.
Vince Young was a quarterback for the Texas Longhorns. He only played two years in the NCAA before moving on to bigger and better things with the Tennessee Titans of the NFL. His NCAA numbers included 4885 yards passing, accumulating 38 touchdowns and a trip
to the BCS title game.
Ricky Williams also played college ball for the Longhorns until he was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 1999. He briefly held the title of most rushing yards in a college career with 6279 yards, but his record was broken the following year. He has also
spent time in the Canadian Football League, but now plays for the Miami Dolphins (NFL).
Adrian Peterson, who currently plays for the struggling Minnesota Vikings, was the main man for the Oklahoma Sooners, as he rushed for 4057 yards on 747 touches. He managed 41 touchdowns in three years and today, is running over defenders with his explosive
style.
Darren Sproles, currently of the San Diego Chargers, was chosen as an all-purpose player. He played running back for the Kansas State Wildcats for a season, where he managed 11 touchdowns on 244 carries.
Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh of the Nebraska Cornhuskers played five seasons in Nebraska, gathering four interceptions and 212 tackles. He was a force to be reckoned with, as his strength overpowered many offensive linemen.
Although he now plays for the Dallas Cowboys, Roy Williams played his college ball in Oklahoma. In his sophomore year he set a record for most tackles for a loss with 12. In his junior year, he led the Sooners to a Cotton Bowl berth and he also won the Bronko
Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive back.
Terence Newman was used as a defensive back and a kickoff returner and excelled at both positions at Kansas State. Currently he is playing in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys.
Bob Stoops, who has been the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners since 1999, led the Sooners to an Orange Bowl and a National Championship during his tenure. Currently, he is on the cusp of returning to the Big 12 championship game.
