Big Apple ? New York USA?

Does anyone know why N Y is called the big apple? Thank you.

  1. because there used to be millions of Apple carts before cars were invented, it smelled like a big apple


  2. No one really knows for sure.  It is connected to an old Jazz term and or a spanish term "manzana principal" that was used for big cities and jazz use turned into meaning a place of importance or "the big time"   there was also a dance called the big apple...

  6. My friend, the reason why NYC is sometime referred to as the "Big Apple" is because since the 1970s the nickname has been use in advertisements campaigns by the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau.

    The nickname, however, was first popularized in the 1920s by John J. Fitz Gerald, a sports writer for the "New York Morning Telegraph."
