Big Ben on record-break streak as Pittsburgh Steelers look for direction – NFL Feature
The Pittsburgh Steelers have been heading the American Football Conference (AFC) North division for quite long but not in last two years. In 2011 they finished second behind the Baltimore Ravens after losing the tiebreaker advantage to them courtesy of their two defeats. At the end, they made it to the playoffs but lost miserably to the Denver Broncos.
The 2012 season is even worse. The team has made start to the season with a loss and since then it has been an inconsistent performance from them. Some of the managers are attempting to get away with it on an excuse that the side is studded with future stars, with not so much experience and training at their back. They could be right in a sense that the team have got rid of many veterans in the cleansing drive which was targeted to bring down pay roster within limits of the National Football League (NFL).
It, however, should not be an excuse for the managers given the team still has many veterans at key positions who are leading and grooming young players. So there should no room given to these players to justify their act. They must play for a win, their win and win of their team.
So, overall the team is a good mix of youth, power, pace, experience, maturity and leadership skills. While it provides an opportunity to youngsters to learn from experience of senior players, they should supplement their performance so that team’s win chances are not hurt during their training and grooming phase.
Also, veterans or experienced players are positioned at key positions in the team. There is no dearth of leadership skills. For example, QB Ben Roethlisberger in spite of his all reservations over working style of coach Todd Haley has been enjoying new offensive scheme introduced by the coach.
He has achieved an exclusive honour from the team to have crossed the higher number of yards of Steelers former QB Bradshaw's 27,989 passing yards. Ben has achieved the target in only 119 games while the former had done it in 168 games.
Although the quarterback has approached maturity of his career, he still has a lot of football left in him and can make the record even better. He has been enjoying the game, and has used himself rather selectively and strategically to earn more playing time.
Ben has been congratulated by the entire Steelers’ organisation on achievement of the exclusive feat, and hopes he is going to play a greater role in successful future of the team.
While Big Ben is upbeat about the current season run, the Steelers are not doing well at all, and this has affected the player’s performance to an extent. He hopes the team will catch up with his level of form and play a better football for the rest of the season.
