Big Drama comes back after a long layoff to win the Whippleton Stakes
The 5-year-old sprinter Big Drama comes back to racing after a 6 and a half month layoff with a bang, downing three other rivals to take the 6 ½ furlong dash in 1 minute and 17.62 seconds to win the $75,000 Whippleton Stakes at Calder racecourse on 4 September,
2011.
Harold Queen owned Big Drama was the champion sprinter of 2010, entered the 4 September 6 ½ furlong event at Calder in hopes of winning it and look to gain momentum towards his ultimate goal, to run in this year’s Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint and defend
his title on 5 November at Churchill Downs.
Trained by David Fawkes, Big Drama last raced in the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector at Gulfstream Park on 15 January, 2011, and he went on to win the 6 furlong test in fine manner, opening his 2011 account with a graded victory.
Big Drama completed the 6 furlong sprint in 1 minute and 8.12 seconds against 3-year-old and above males. Custom for Carlos and Our Edge finished second and third respectively.
In Whippleton Stakes, Big Drama went on to defeat three rivals who were sent at the odds of 1 to 10 to win the race.
David Fawkes informed that the 5-year-old son of Montbrook, did it without a shoe, and he might have left his shoe while breaking from the gate.
He further said, that he was relieved to know that Calder racecourse officials were letting the race go at the racecourse rather than at Monmouth Park, and he revealed that he did not want his star sprinter to travel.
Under jockey Daniel Centeno, Big Drama broke well in a field which was reduced to 4 runners after 3 early scratches.
Big Drama broke from the rail and he comfortable sat second for the first quarter, and when they broke on to the back stretch, Big Drama took command of the field coming in to the far turn and set good fractions of 45.42 seconds at half mile mark.
Big Drama coasted home after assuming the lead and he hit the wire exactly in 1 minute and 17.62 seconds.
Black Diamond Cat, Peace at Dawn and Accredit finished second, third and fourth to complete the order of finish.
