Big Drama ready to hit the tracks and pile on wins for trainer David Fawkes
The son of Montbrook, Big Drama is apparently coming out of his big break, as trainer David Fawkes visited the 5-year-old brown horse in Ocala, New York, where he has spent the last several months at his owner, Harold Queen’s, farm.
Big Drama is the reigning Breeders’ Cup Sprint champion, and, also the Eclipse Award winner.
Fawkes visit to see Big Drama was aimed to see how the champion horse is doing and to decide his near future activities, races and all.
According to David Fawkes, he liked what he saw as the horse did not breeze, but had a slight run for the last eighth of a mile.
It wasn’t a timed work-out session but rather a morning stretch which left the trainer satisfied.
After his fabulous, 2-3 and 4-year-old career, Big Drama only had one race to run this season and that too was on 15 January, 2011, at the Gulfstream Park, where he set a new six furlong track record, winning the Grade 3 Mr Prospector Stakes on dirt.
Under jockey E Coa, Big Drama set up a blistering pace to finish the race in a record breaking 1 minute and 8.02 seconds.
He defeated Custom for Carlos by a massive 4 lengths difference.
Big Drama out of Riveting Drama had an outstanding 2010 season with three wins and two runner-up finishes out of 5 starts.
The David Fawkes trained five-year-old horse nailed his two openers in 2010 with massive wins.
First to go was the Ponche Handicap on dirt at Calder on 12 June, 2010, over a distance of six furlongs fast, second was the Grade 2 Smile Sprint Handicap on 10 July, 2010, also at Calder.
Big Drama under jockey E Coa pressed leaders on the outside, suddenly quickened to lead two furlongs out, gave his all in the last half a furlong to claim the race of 12 by 1 ½ lengths over Mambo Meister.
The next two starts were at the Saratoga race course, on 8 August 2010 Big Drama participated in the Grade 1 Alfred G Vanderbilt Handicap, over a familiar distance of six furlongs.
It was a valiant effort from both, the jockey and the runner, but in the end couldn’t catch Majesticperfection.
It was an ugly break, he bumped but quickly recovered, but from then on in its was just about chasing the leaders. He came close and could’ve won if the race was 2 furlongs longer.
The highlight of his 2010 season was winning the Grade 1 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs on 6 November, 2011.
E Coa guided Big Drama, and from the break to the finish everything went exceptionally well, as the horse won it to add another trophy to his illustrious four-year career.
Big Drama is going to Calder for 30 days and from there on to New York for the all important Grade 1 Vanderbilt on 7 August at six furlongs.
