Big Drama with Apriority all set to defend his title in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint
The 5-year-old David Fawkes trained horse Big Drama returns to Churchill Downs to defend his title in the Grade 1, $ 1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint on 5 November, 2011.
David Fawkes  in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint has doubled his chances like Bob Baffert and Jenine Sahadi by sending in another hopeful for the Sprint called Apriority.
The Florida bred son of Montbrook, out of Riveting Drama by Notebook, Big Drama has won his last 3 races. Starting from the last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint win, Big Drama in the year 2011 has participated in two races and till now holds a perfect record.
After defeating Hamazing Destiny in the 2010 Sprint, Big Drama was pointed toward the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector at Gulfstream Park on 15 January, 2011.
Under jockey E Coa, Big Drama went all out in the six furlong dash and in the process defeated Custom for Carlos and Our Edge, who finished second and third, respectively, while Big Drama covered the distance in 1 minute and 8.12 seconds.
His next race came after the span of 8 months, and it was the Whippleton Handicap Calder racecourse on 4 September, 2011.
D Centeno aboard Big Drama came good in the final furlong to defeat Black Diamond Cat and Peace at Dawn, the second and third of the race while topped the six and a half furlong distance in 1 minute and 17.62 seconds.
Apriority on the other hand is coming off a seventh place finish in the Grade 1 Vosburgh to winner Giant Ryan at Belmont Park on 1 October, 2011.
Apriority has one thing in his favour like his partner Big Drama Apriority ran a spirited race in the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes on the Kentucky Derby undercard and finished second behind Aikenite.
According to David Fawkes, neither of his runners have to jump to the lead, but Big Drama one would suppose be a little further ahead than Apriority in the chase.
The Breeders’ Cup Sprint 2011 has a very evenly matched field, and it is natural that David Fawkes would be feeling a little under pressure with the defending champion in the wings.
