  1. Kilauea has been erupting steadily since 1983. No, it's not really dangerous if you are smart and use your head. I have hiked out to the lava flow twice and survived.  :)  The park rangers will mark the trail out to the current flow with reflective tape. If you follow the tape and stay on the path, you'll be fine. People get hurt (and even killed) when they stray off the path and go out to the lava bench or up the side of Pu'u O'o, for example. If the lava bench collapses or if a person becomes overwhelmed by the sulfur dioxide the vent is emitting, he or she can be badly injured or killed. You have NOTHING to worry about if you don't leave the path. Hundreds of people visit Volcanoes National Park every day and very, very few of them are ever hurt. You'll be fine. Just be smart and follow the rules.

  2. There's not a big chance of the volcano erupting in a massive way, or exploding. Most major eruptions/explosions occur when there's a build up of pressure, and no way for it to escape. Since the big island volcano is constantly having minor eruptions, the chances of a major eruption are slim. And even if there was a major eruption due to the slope of the volcano, the lava would mostly flow over uninhabited areas.

  3. make sure to take home some volcanic rocks,,,,Pele wants you to.

  4. You'll be fine. The Big Island is fairly large. If you stay in Kona, which is 3 hours from the volcano, you will be fine even if it erupts. Like the previous (really good) answer said, it has been erupting for over 20 plus years.

  5. Well if you stay on the Kona side or in the city of Hilo you are pretty much safe. It is almost impossible for anything to happen there because people hike up to both of the volcanoes every day. The big island has one volcano that is erupting all of the time and another that rarely ever erupts. Mauna Lao the largest volcano erupted over five to seven years ago. And many experts say that it is going to erupt it next fifty years. So don't get worried. And even if the volcano explodes the best place to go is to evacuate to Kona or to a shelter. But don't get worried the large volcano is very unlikely to erupt. And one of the volcanoes is erupting every minute, in fact it is erupting right now but even when that was emits large amounts of lava and sulfur fumes they rarely ever goes near the civilized part of the island.
