I believe it is b/c his name is Big L Corleone.   thats his full name.

Corleone was a famous gangstar. Big L aka Lamont Coleman used his name. Big L was a legend props to you for listening to him.

It's the name of the crime family from "The Godfather".

It's very common for m.c's to also go by real and fictional mob names.

It's a pretty intuitive connection.

Big L has a gangster image and thus he identifies with another famous gangster.

There's also the rapper Capone, Nas calls himself Nascobar (after the Columbian druglord Pablo Escobar), the Wu using the Wu Gambinos theme....etc etc etc.
