Big Sam Slams big wage demands
Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce has critised players for their high wage demands. Allardyce who is also known as "Big Sam" is facing a situation in which new owners of the club won’t be spending much in the January transfer window, reports in the media
suggests that only £5m will be made available to buy new players which is not enough obviously. That is why he will be looking at loan signings and players available on free transfers.
Because of this Allardyce had to rely heavily on youth this season. Players like defender Phil Jones, 18 and loanee from Manchester United Mame Biram Diouf, 22, have played 10 and 9 games respectively.
Indian poultry giant Venky's are to complete a takeover of the Rovers within few days, but chairperson Anuradha J Desai revealed this week that there will be no big name signings in January.
Sam admits that even those players who are available for free are becoming hard to afford.
He said: "The vast sums of money that are coming in at the top end of the game are stretching the rest of the sides to try to get as much benefit out of what finance they've got and get the best players they can find for that finance.”
Sam believes that nowadays player’s wages are the biggest problem and not the transfer fee that a club demands for his player.
He further added: “They [wages] are astronomically high and have now made it very difficult to even take a very talented free transfer today which is what the norm would be for Blackburn in the past, or a small fee with good wages.”
These days high wages are making it very difficult to take somebody who might not even have a transfer fee attached to them, because of the difference between the net value that they want and the net value that they're worth.
For the past decade or so the Premier League has become the most popular league in the world, In order to attract the best players, more and more salaries are being offered to them in order to compete with the Spanish League.
2008-09 stats showed that, big clubs were spending more than £1.32 billion on salaries, more than Serie A (£930 million), La liga (£800 million) and the Bundesliga (£684 million). On average, salaries in England are 65% more than Spain.
Players are often rewarded for their services, which is the reason why foreign talent is found in almost every other club. But with the fierce competition between the clubs, players often demand high salaries because they know that there will be many clubs
who will be able to meet their demands.
Smaller clubs are the most effected in this scenario, as their wage structure doesn’t allow them to pay heavily.
Blackburn currently lying 18th in the table and have taken just 9 points from 10 league games. They are now among the favourites to get relegated. There is only one hope for Sam, which is to splash the cash and bring in new players. Only that
can save Blackburn and the manager’s job.
