Big Wave World Tour joins the ASP family – Surfing news
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) International has finalised the acquisition deal with the global Big Wave World Tour (BWWT).
According to the latest announcement made by the ASP CEO Paul Speaker, the professional surfing governing body will begin extending its support to the BWWT in the current year, whereas the formal sanction will commence next year, i.e. 2014.
“We are very pleased to have finalized the deal between the ASP and the Big Wave World Tour,” Speaker said. “The competitors on the BWWT are some of the fiercest and most-respected watermen on the planet and we are eager about the opportunity to take their
tour to the next level. This arrangement also allows the world’s best surfers on the ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) to compete in big-wave events moving forward. 2014 will be an exciting year on all fronts.”
Gary Liden, founder of the BWWT, is pretty excited about being scooped up by professional surfing governing body.
Commenting on the acquisition of the big-wave surfing platform, he said that the newly-found arrangement will be great for the BWWT, particularly due to the support and guidance of the ASP.
He further added that watching the elite ASP surfers from the World Championship Tour taking on the world’s best big-wave surfers in some of the world’s most intimidating waves in the years to come.
The BWWT will kick-off with the Quiksilver Ceremonial Chile presented by Subaru in Chile. Currently, the tour is comprised of six mentioned, including the aforementioned Chile event. The other five events on the tour will be held at Punta Hermosa/Peru, Lincoln
City/Oregon, Half moon Bay/California, Baja California/ Mexico and Punta Galea/Spain.
Once the formal sanction between the two tours commence next years, the fans of surfing will get to watch the likes of 11-time ASP World Championship Tour Kelly Slater, two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning and reigning ASP World Champion Joel Parkinson
taking on the likes of Greg Long, Carlos Burle and Grant Baker.
Other than the newly-acquired BWWT, ASP already has the ASP World Championship Tour, ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, ASP World Junior Tour, ASP World Longboard Tours and regional tours under its umbrella.
