Big eighth inning helps New York Yankees defeat New York Mets 9-3 - MLB Updates
The New York Yankees’ batters blistered heavily in the eighth inning to take the club into a 9-3 win over the New York Mets for second straight time at the Yankee Stadium, on Sunday night, May 22.
Receiving two-run deficit right from the second inning the Yankees remained scoreless until Derek Jeter led the eight-run seventh inning. The designated hitter Jeter chipped the ball to centre-field to earn a tying RBI double off the Mets’ starter Mike Pelfrey.
Before allowing this double, Pelfrey has given just one run, two walks over six innings, but this shot ended his spell and Mets’ manager Terry Collins aligned Tim Byrdak with a hope to restrict the Yankees. Byrdak intentionally walked Mark Teixeira before
being relieved by Pedro Beato.
This walk gave Alex Rodriguez a chance to swing his bat and he did just that in striking fashion to earn his club another run.
"They got exactly what they wanted. Alex just didn't hit it hard enough," Teixeira said. "Any time you have a sinkerball against a rightly, you're going to take those odds, but Alex has beaten them."
The Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi was also impressed with the technique Alex used.
Girardi said, "It wasn't a grand slam. It was just as effective in a sense,"
Robinson Cano scored an RBI single while Brett Gardner and Chris Dickerson each added an RBI double to elevate the lead into an unassailable 9-3 position in the seventh inning.
Winning the second-straight game against their rivals, the Yankees took back first place in the American League East after losing the series opener.
"We've been talking about playing small ball here for the last week or two, and I don't think it could have gone any smaller," Rodriguez said. "Those are the things we have not been doing the last three or four weeks."
Despite receiving a homer in the first inning by Curtis Granderson, the Mets scored three runs in the second innings and enjoyed the 3-1 lead into the seventh. Willie Harris, Ronny Paulino and Jason Pridie all scored an RBI each to the Mets three runs.
The Mets tried hard to score as they touched eleven times off the Yankees’ starter Ivan Nova, however they failed to increase their runs. As soon as Nova ended his six innings, the Yankees’ reliever Luis Ayala and closer, Lance Pendleton tossing scoreless
innings, washed away all the hopes of the Mets.
