  1. Steve Arwin (killed recently by a sting ray), Terry Arwin

  2. Mungo Park (Scottish explorer) - first expeditions to explore the course of the Niger river in Western Africa - began at the mouth of the Gambia River on June 21, 1795, and traveled northeast on horseback and by foot over rough country. He reached the Niger River at Ségou (which is now in Mali), tried to find the source of the Niger but didn't, he drowned while looking for it

Johann Rebmann (German missionary) - found Mount Kilimanjaro located in Tanzania

Richard Burton & companion John Speke - first Europeans to visit Somalialand, searched for the source of the Nile and found L.Tanganika - Burton went home but Speke and James Grant continued and found L Victoria

Vasco da Gama (Portuguese) - stopped in present-day Mozambique, then Mombassa (present-day Kenya),

Mary Kingsley English writer -  lived amongst the natives (Angola), returned to Africa to study cannibal tribes and became the first European to climb Mount Cameroon, - made two pioneering trips to West and Central Africa, - the first European to enter remote parts of Gabon

Emin Pasha (German) - led a mission to the Lake Tanganyika region.

Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Battuta (Moroccan) - traveled through much of Africa

Martin Behaim (German mapmaker and navigator) - voyage to the coast of West Africa and discovered the Congo R

Alvise da Cadamosto (Venice, Italy) - sailed up the Gambia river to the Geba River

Bartolomeu Dias (Portuguese) - explored Africa's coast, supposedly named the southern tip of Africa the "Cape of Storms"; it was later renamed the Cape of Good Hope

Diogo Dias  (Portuguese) - first European to sail to Madagascar and named it the Isle of St. Lawrence

Hannu (ancient Egyptian explorer) - Hennu is said to have sailed down the Red Sea to explore the southeastern areas of the Arabian peninsula (called Punt) around 2750 B.C (sailed to what is now part of eastern Ethiopia and Somalia)

Richard Lemon Lander (English explorer ) - three trips to West Africa - first Europeans to canoe down the lower Niger River to its delta

With the exception of Hannu, these were all European explorers (from the continent Europe)

  3. Stanley and Livingstone are probably the most well-known these days. But there are many others, including many of the Portuguese explorers who charted their way around the African coast on their way to India and China.

Among some of the more recent are people like Mungo Park, Sir Richard Burton, Ibn Battuta and Mary Kingsley.
