Big fourth inning leads Chicago Cubs past Milwaukee Brewers 7-4 – MLB Update
The Chicago Cubs scored five lead-generating runs in the fourth inning to help them defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-4 at Miller Park, Milwaukee on Friday, April 8.
The Cubs landed in the fourth inning with a two-run deficit and turned it into a three-run lead. Geowany Soto playing as designated hitter set the momentum launching a two-run tying homer to centre-field. The momentum then carried by Jeff Baker who smashed
a huge three-run homer to left-field and gained a three run lead.
Brewers were not ready to let the game slip out of their hands as the batters managed to trim the lead by one in the bottom of the fourth. The game turned into interesting situation when the Brewers made another run in the fifth with Casey McGehee’s RBI
single to right-field.
It was the Cubs’ day, as they did not get under pressure and struck back again in the sixth with one run taking the advantage 6-4. The Cubs made the opposition helpless in the later innings and ended the game with three run lead acquiring one more run in
the ninth inning.
The Brewers’ manager Tom Roenicke seemed unhappy with starter Randy Wolf, who permitted six-runs on nine hits including two home-runs for the second time in two games. The left-handed pitcher managed five strike-outs but not enough for a victory.
"The pitcher, he's got to be able to still stay focused," Roenicke said. "It's not that much different than a pitcher walking the leadoff guy, or the leadoff guy getting a base hit. I think the pitchers, too, sometimes need to pick up that fielder."
The Cubs’ pitcher Carlos Zambrano went six innings and consumed four runs on seven hits. The right-handed pitcher, having a 3-0 winning streak over the Brewers, could not display his previous form and ended the outing with a 5.25 ERA. It was a good sign
for the Cubs that their reliever came back into form with scoreless innings in the later part of the outing. Relievers’ Sean Marshall, Kerry Wood and Carlos Marmol did not allow any run.
The Cubs put in a tremendous effort as they managed to contain the Brewers’ offence and take a decisive victory. The Brewers struggled throughout the game as they were unable to get their offence going and put up runs when they were needed. It will be interesting
to see how the Cubs carry their winning form in to the next game of the series. The Brewers will be looking to improve from their previous performance and get a victory in game two.
Both teams will land again on Sunday for the second game of three scheduled meetings this season.
