Big hitters a big problem for Detroit Tigers - MLB News
It seems Detroit Tigers have already started to panic. Just a couple of days ago, the Tigers were brushed aside 0-3 by their arch rivals Cleveland Indians in a three game series, which dented team’s confidence levels. Even the brilliance of Justin Verlander
has been unable to win games for the Tigers.
General Manager Dave Dombrowski and Manager Jim Leyland will have to solve the pieces of the puzzle as early as possible to help the Tigers find the winning ways. The biggest problem for the Tigers this season has been their big hitters. Prince Fielder,
who was signed for a record nine year $214 million deal, has been the major disappointment. Playing as first baseman, he was expected to take the Tigers to the top of the American League Central Division standing table.
However, the left hander has not been able to fulfill his immense potential, which led the Tigers to 22 defeats in their last 33 games. Fielder averaged almost. 300 last season with 38 home-runs and it will be interesting to see if he can get himself back
into form to change the course of his destiny.
"That'd be a better question for them," Leyland said. "Because we've done everything we can to keep them loose, keep them concentrating, having some fun. So if somebody out there is tight, that's something they have to deal with as an individual."
"I don't blame (Cabrera)," Leyland said. "Write what you saw. The guy doesn't come close to throwing a strike. And then, without question, he throws ball four, and he gets the pitch. But beside that, we had our opportunities."
"Yeah, it's frustrating, but you play every day, so you gotta let it go," Fielder said. "I don't know what else there is."
Tigers’ third baseman Miguel Cabrera will also have to up his game play considerably to win back his fans’ hearts. The hard hitting striker has blown away too many opportunities since the start of 2012 season and it will be exciting to see he turn things
around before the All Star Break. Tigers next face Minnesota Twins on Friday, May 25.
