Big hitters aiming to go big at Reno-Tahoe Open
All the top players are featuring in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational this week but some of the game’s big hitters will be going for glory at the Reno-Tahoe Open. The Stableford scoring allows the players to be more aggressive than usual as the points are
awarded for every hole.
Former winner John Rollins, Billy Horschel, JB Holmes and John Daly will be teeing off on Thursday in a bid to regain their form.
Rollins is ranked second in total driving and Holmes is fifth in driving on the PGA Tour. However, there was one major setback as the defending champion Scott Piercy withdrew from the event.
Scott got a place in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational after winning the Canadian Open. However, there was one good news, that three-time major winner Padraig Harrington will be featuring in the tournament.
Harrington will be playing alongside Stewart Cink and Brian g*y. Another strong pairing will be of Rocco Mediate, Camilo Villegas and Justin Leonard.
According to the Stableford scoring, eight points are given for a double eagle, five for an eagle, two for a birdie and zero points for par.
A player will lose a point for a bogey and three for double bogey or worse. This means that a player can even blow off a four point lead heading to the last hole.
Players will take their chances and will go for birdies and eagles on the holes because even if they get a par score over all, they may still not be in contention to win the event. The individual score of a player on a hole counts, not his overall score
after the 18 holes.
The Stableford scoring system was introduced by Dr. Frank Barney Gorton Stableford (1870–1959). Its aim was to encourage the golfers to keep on playing, even if they had a few bad holes.
This scoring makes things very tricky for the players and they are forced to go big on holes. Tactics is not the right way but aggression is.
The tournament boasts prize money of $3 million and this year’s event will be played at Dr. Frank Barney Gorton Stableford.
