Big money/bank mystery... any insight?

i wrote a check for a down payment on a car. it's been 3 months now, the car company has their money but for some reason there is no record of it in our account. the money is still sitting in the bank. i thought once the reciever of the check cashes that check, it gets posted. what is going on?

(like i said, it was 3 months ago that the check was cashed) i already asked the financial guy at the car place and they DO have their money

Did you ever receive a canceled check?  Did you check your records for a mathematical error?  Can you find out when exactly the payment went through to the car dealer so you can examine the records for that date (if they have their money, the check would be posted for the day the money became available to them, not when you wrote the check).  Otherwise, you'll have to go through your bank and have them check their records.  It is possible that the bank posted the check from the wrong account (this happened to a friend of mine, two people at the same branch had very similar names and they would cash checks on the wrong account-one time they even deposited the others check into his account),
