Big names fail to steal the show at Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open 2012
The Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open 2012 concluded at Golf Gerre Losone, Switzerland this Sunday, with most of the top-ranked LET (Ladies European Tour) stars struggling to perform better through the four days.
The Swiss Open, one of the prestigious events on the LET, was expected to stage a tough battle among big names, like the defending champion Diana Luna of Italy, Karen Lunn, Carlota Ciganda, Lee-Anne Pace, Florentyna Parker, Linda Wessberg, English Laura
Davies and others.
However, despite the strong field, lesser-known players grabbed the spotlight and outperformed most of the favourite contenders.
Italian Diana Luna, who was the hot favourite for the coveted title, could not live up to the expectations of her fans. She posted an overall 280 to finish tied for the 10th spot on the leaderboard.
Luna has been a prominent contender on the LET. She won the last edition of the Swiss Open in an amazing style, and had vowed to repeat the performance in the current event.
Aussie Rebecca Artis, who got off to a solid start in the event, faced a dramatic slump in her leaderboard position, when Scottish Carly Booth and two German contenders outrivaled her in the fourth round.
Artis led the first three rounds, as she posted a 64, 71 and 70, respectively. The Australian prodigy, however, slipped to tie-8 in the concluding round after she scored a dismal 74.
Laura Davies, who improved her position to the 5th in the third round, after registering a 66, slipped to the 25th spot when she posted an unimpressive 75 in the final round.
Scottish Carly Booth, one of the rising stars in the field, amazed the Swiss spectators and her rivals by winning the tournament. It was her second LET victory.
Golf commentators said that lesser-known players, like Booth and others, reversed the final results, which is a good sign. They said that fans usually expect their favourite players to do the best on the course, but it does not always happen.
The young Scottish player said that she is thrilled about recording her second LET triumph, and will try to keep the momentum going in the upcoming events.
“I wasn’t trying to think about it and I think with having the experience of winning previously in the Scottish I had grasped the feeling of trying to stay calm and positive,” said the 19-year-old star.
