Big names to play at 2012 Kia Classic
The current world number one Yani Tseng and other fearsome contenders appear set to enter the field of the Kia Classic, slated to start from March 22-25 at the La Costa Resort and Spa, with eyes fixed on the title.
Since La Costa has been a favourite among players, it is expected that this week’s event will stage a tough battle.
However, experts said that the star performer in the Kia Classic will likely be Yani Tseng.
The $1.7 million event is not only featuring big names, but there will also be lesser-known players trying to prove their worth.
Rising players, who are struggling to find a foothold in women’s golf, will see a tougher field than most of the events they have played in their careers.
The LPGA Tour has given sponsor’s exemption to two players, highlighting the tournament’s field.
Observers said that taking rookies on board will prove fruitful for the entire sport, as the spectators and officials have been seeking to lure more players to women’s golf.
The players who received exemptions are: English Melissa Reid and South Korean Ha Neul Kim. Both players have put their trust in the support the LPGA is giving them.
Renowned players have welcomed the move of the Tour’s officials to offer a chance to lesser-known players.
However, most of the spotlight is being put on the current world number one, as she recorded yet another victory to her profile by winning the Founders Cup last week.
Tseng said that she is pretty confident and the Kia Classic is one of her favourite events on the LPGA.
"I just hung in there and do my best and try not to worry about (what) other people are doing,'' she told the reporters following her stunning triumph at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup.
"Actually, (Saturday) I went back to look (at) a little golf on the senior tour, and here is something like they were doing. They don't care what other people are playing, you know? You just kind of focus on yourself”.
She will be entering the field with a more confident and a bolder approach, which is highly likely to enable her to bag yet another triumph.
