LCD does best in a more brightly lit environment.  Better for gaming according to some.  They have plastic screens so if there are little hands in the house that will be touching the screen repeatedly, that could be a problem.  Could cause you to get a/some bad pixel(s) which unless there are a certain number in 1 sq inch, the warranty will not cover.

Plasma does better in a normal/darkly lit room.  Better for fast action content like sports, action movies and so forth.  Screen is glass, won't have the "touching" issue you have with and LCD.  However, a plasma MUST be kept upright, an LCD can be laid down to transport.  

DLP & projection type tv's have their fans but typically, they will not last as long as the other two without maintenance.  Maintenance is usually changing bulbs and can cost upwards of $300.  One of the reasons that they are cheaper when you buy them.  Plasma & LCD (depends on the maker) can last 18-20 years according to some testing.

I personally like the Panasonic plasma in either resolution.  For LCD, I'd have to say Samsung.

But go to several stores, watch a variety of sets, choose the right type for your needs and pick the one your eyes like the best!
