Big shots sent packing in the second day of Volvo World Match Play Championship
Second day of the Volvo World Match Play Championship was through the halfway mark when some of the big shots who had triumphed on day one, had fallen victim to the rampaging young guns. The morning session of the event has culminated with the rest of the
players in eight groups, who have not played on the first day, were pitched against their pool mates.
Y.E Yang of South Korea, who suffered a defeat by the former world number one Martin Kaymer the previous day, will have to take an early flight home after suffering another defeat by the young countryman Seung-yul Noh with a 2 & 1.
Young Noh started off his round and bagged the third, fifth and sixth holes to mount pressure on Yang, who had already suffered a defeat the previous day. Noh went ahead to win three more holes to finally win the round.
Previous day’s winner Miguel Angel Jimenez, who overtook the Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, had to take a back seat as the Swede Johan Edfors thrashed him with 2 & 1. South African Retief Goosen, suffered his consecutive defeat on the second day at the
hands of Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts with 1-up. The round turned out to be a tough one as both players battered to bag holes in the session. Goosen had early gains when he won four holes in front nine but gave up most of them in back nine.
Scotsman Paul Lawrie and Ian Poulter finished off their rounds for a tie and Lawrie is now playing with Francesco Molinari, who tied his first round match with Poulter. The group is the most tightly contested for the moment and will turn to playoff holes
to decide the leader among the three.
Jhonattan Vegas defeated South African Louis Oosthuizen with 1-up, while England’s Ross Fisher defeated Ryan Moore also with a 1-up. Moore had suffered a defeat by the world number two Luke Donald on the previous day and will be bidding farewell to the rest
of the tournament.
To mark another of the upsets, Aaron Baddeley overtook Denmarks’ Anders Hansen with 1-up. Hansen was defeated yesterday by world number one Lee Westwood and with his consecutive defeat, will not be able to qualify for the knock-out stage to be played among
the final 16 players.
