Question:

Bigger Fuse?

Our central air blew a fuse ( 3 Amps ). We were told that it would be safe to put a 5 amp fuse in it. Is that safe or would it blow the circuit board.

  1. what type of air do you have? it is some what common for an air to blow a fuse one or twice in the a/c lifetime. so how old is? did you try to replace it with a 3 amp fuse? if it blew again then a 5 amp fuse may work but you are risking it. I would go with whatever the manufactur says find the owner manual and read it. if you dont have a copy of it you can find one at your local library.

  2. NO!!! it is not safe. That is unless the unit was under fused in the first place.

It is unlikely that it is under fused. Electricians will typically use the MAX fuse recommended by the manufacture. They do this to keep from having trouble calls. Return trips and unhappy clients are a good source of profit.

  3. Being only 3 amps may be the reason it blew.

Call your local heating & air people & ask about that. You'll need the model of your unit which can be found inside of it's electrical panel.

  4. there should be a metal plate on your unit with electrical info

on it check what it says for output amperage (amps)

  5. Fuses are rated to protect the unit. If you go with a higher amperage fuse, the higher current may burn out the wiring or the circuit board.

  6. The wiring diagram for your unit should indicate the proper fuse size.If it says 3 amp then that is the size you need to replace it with. The purpose of the fuse is to protect. If the new fuse (3 amp) blows you need to contact a repair man.(Don't call the one that is spaming)
