Ok, so whats the biggest odds-on horse ever to have won, personally the biggest i can ever remember is a 1/20 shot that i inadvertantly backed in my union jack, and it won!

But i wanna know if theres ever been a one at shorter odds?

Also, biggest odds-on that has gone on to lose?

  1. I seem to remember a 1/10 shot that got beaten a few years back. Personally, I try to avoid odds-on favourites, but they can sometimes be useful in multiple bets.

By the way, betting tax was introduced in 1966..

  2. i can remember when i was at Wolverhampton races about 15 years ago it was a 3 horse race and pat eddery was on the fav at 1/66 and would you believe it won!!! sorry  i cant remember the horse perhaps miss salsa can shed some more light on the horses name.i think the biggest priced winner is 250/1.Eddie i can assure you the horse was 1/66 on course please remember the racecourse was free of betting tax in those days.250/1 is correct .

Eddie, you are getting on my ****. Equinotical was a 250/1 winner at Kelso in 1990.

Victory Spin won @1/66 @Beverley 25th may 1999 aye aye

  3. CLOUDED YELLOW won a two horse race in 1962 at 50 to 1 on. No I did not back it, just remember it.

Hibee. Betting Tax started in 1964.

  4. Wilwyn won a few races at 33/1 on about 55 years ago.  Clouded Yellow did win at 1/50 - well remembered - it was on  7 July 1962.  At that time in two horse races they used not to return prices for both contestants, only the winner. There have been instances however where no betting at all has been returned since the winner was such a certainty that bookies were not prepared to lay. There is a race at Newmarket called The Whip, where this might have occurred.  Royal Forest was beaten in a 4 horse race for the Clarence House Stakes at 1/25 on 23/9/48. Incidentally, I confirm that Betting Tax was introduced in 1966.

Bernard (1) sorry but I have to doubt your story as 15 years ago Betting Tax was still in force, so not only can I not recall but cannot even imagine an SP of 1/66 being returned, since that would have been a clear loser to an off course punter, a situation which would have been unreasonable. Nor can I recall a winner at 250-1 but there was one at 150-1 in say the last 20 years.

Bernard (2) I think the question by implication is about returned SP's which would have affected all off course punters, even tho' bets placed on course were exempt.

If Equinotical was 250-1 I accept that - all I said was that I did not recall it. It was irrelevant to the question anyway.

OK Bernard I'll give credit where it's due but I must say I am surprised that they would have returned such a price rather than no starting prices. I still claim biggest odds on loser - so far - in Royal Forest.

  5. I backed a 28/1 winner about 1966.

It was a two horse race.  The loser was 1/33.

    Before betting tax.

  6. 1/20 is the shortest price allowable.

Secretariat won his race after the Belmont at 1/20.  Ruffian won twice at 1/20.
