Biggest Surprise on the PGA Tour this season
For the PGA Tour, this has been one eventful season, involving numerous surprises and brilliant performances.
We saw Tiger Woods make a terrific come back, as he won three times this season but the biggest surprise of the season?
This season, all but a few have delivered unbelievable performances. Starting from Bubba Watson, he shot that bombastic approach from the rough, in the playoff, to win the Masters.
Adam Scott’s meltdown in the Open Championship was one h**l of a surprise, as he surrendered a four-stroke lead on the last four holes to Ernie Els.
Let’s take a look at some of the biggest surprises that we have seen this season.
Ernie Els made the headline when, from out of nowhere, he won the British Open for the second time. The South African was nowhere to be seen on the leaderboard on the first three days.
However, his magnificent fight back on the last day was enough to pressurise Adam Scott. The Australian was sitting with a comfortable lead until the last five holes.
Ernie had finished the round earlier, so Scott knew what he had to come up with. However, luckily for Ernie and unluckily for Scott, the Australian squandered the four-shot lead right at the depth.
Scott needed a par on the last hole to force a playoff but he missed his put just by a whisker.
Adam Scott’s meltdown and Ernie Els wining the Claret Jug for the second time was one big surprise, as nobody had anticipated that Ernie would win, especially the way in which he won.
Rory McIlroy has been hot this season. He won the tour money list on both the European and PGA Tours but his victory at the Kiawah Islands was pretty surprising.
It is not the fact that he does not possess enough skill, it was the manner in which he won, which was pretty astounding. The Irish national won the PGA Championship by a huge margin of seven shots.
After winning the PGA Championship, it looked as if Rory would clean sweep all other major trophies. It looked even more likely when he won back to back events in the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Rory started the Tour Championship ranked at the top on the FedEx Cup standings. On the other hand, Brandt Snedeker was ranked fifth in the standings.
However, with the way Rory and Tiger were playing, his victory looked unlikely. Defying all the odds, Snedeker went in to the Tour Championship and shot a magnificent round of 64 and 68 on the weekend to lift the FedEx Cup.
His victory surely did surprise many, as he came from nowhere and dazzled the field at East Lake.
To me, Europe’s success at the Ryder Cup this year has to be the story of the year. Team Europe was down and out going in to the singles on Sunday but somehow it managed to pull off a miracle.
Later known as the ‘Miracle of Medinah’, Team Europe erased a four-point deficit in the singles to mark one of the biggest comebacks in the history of the Ryder Cup.
Team USA was leading 10-6 after the foursomes and fourballs. Cometh the Sunday, cometh the hour, Europe staged a magnificent and a remarkable comeback.
For me, that was the biggest surprise of the year as well!
