  1. According to the American Kennel Club, the largest breed of dog is the English Mastiff (also known as the Old English Mastiff). Mastiffs are the heaviest dog, but not the tallest. The tallest is the Irish Wolfhound. The tallest Wolfhound was a recorded 5 foot high at its shoulders.

According to the Guniess Book of World Records, the worlds heaviest as well as longest dog ever recorded was an English Mastiff named Zorba. In 1989, Zorba weighed 343 lbs and was 8 feet 3 inches long from nose to tail! That same dog also holds the Guniess record for the Worlds's Largest Dog.

Both Mastiffs and Wolfhounds have short coats, though the Wolfhound has a more "wirery" and a bit more shaggy than a Mastiff. I would not call a Wolfhound a long haired breed. Both breeds are known to be real sweethearts, that are actually suited to apartment life, since they are couch potatoes.

  2. hmm i dont really know, but my friends great dane tops others and weighs 190 lbs. But he is not obese though. He stands about 6 feet and 6 inches. He is the biggest dog ive seen.

  3. Great Dane

(Also said the Irish Wolfhound could also be the biggest dog)

This Dane is fawn mantle, a non-standard color not recognized by the Great Dane Club of AmericaIn the United States, the breed standard for the Great Dane is described on the American Kennel Club website [4] The male should appear more massive throughout than the female, with larger frame and heavier bone. In the ratio between length and height, the Great Dane should be square. In females, a somewhat longer body is permissible, providing she is well proportioned to her height. Coarseness or lack of substance are equally undesirable. The male shall not be less than 30 inches (75 cm) at the shoulders, but it is preferable that he be 32 inches or more (>80 cm), providing he is well proportioned to his height. The female shall not be less than 28 inches (70 cm) at the shoulders, but it is preferable that she be 30 inches or more (>75 cm), providing she is well proportioned to her height. Danes under minimum height must be disqualified. Males must weigh a minimum of 120 lbs (54.5 kg).[5]

In August 2004, a Great Dane named "Gibson" from Grass Valley, California was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's tallest dog, measuring 107 cm (42.2 in) at the withers[6]. It is not in the best interest of the breed to attempt to achieve the "tallest" dog. Breeding for height will sacrifice structure and confirmation in the
