Biggest upsets of 2012 – Sam Querrey beats Novak Djokovic – BNP Paribas Masters
Ranked world number 22nd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Sam Querrey, attained the biggest win his career against Serbian challenger, Novak Djokovic, in the second round of the indoor hard courts of the BNP Paribas Masters, Paris.
The 25-year-old Serbian contestant arrived at the Central Courts wearing a Darth Vader mask, as it was an occasion of Halloween. He made a powerful entry against his challenger and bagged away the first set with a 6-0 score line. In the second set, the Serbian
professional struggled hard to overcome his initial deficit of 2-4 against his rival. This gave the American challenger a great push and he quickly overcame by securing the five break points.
In a post match interview, Djokovic told the media, “When you're playing somebody that hits, that serves that well in the corners, there is nothing you can do. Sam played very well, served very well.”
Querrey responded, “It was a little embarrassing. I walked over to where Casey, my physio/chiropractor sits with my girlfriend and Casey's wife, and I said, ‘I hope I can get two games in this set. Once I got the two games I kind of settled down. I was like,
‘Okay, that's all I want.’ But then I got rolling and got more confidence and started serving better and being a little more aggressive.”
Analyzing the head-to-head between the two challengers, Querrey, has never been that fortunate as before. The reigning world number one, Djokovic, first faced his American competitor in the hard courts of Melbourne at the third round of the Australia Open
in 2008. The Serbian did not even give his challenger a single chance to take over and consolidated his win 6-3, 6-1, 6-3. The duet encountered each other in the quarterfinals of the Masters Series at Monte-Carlo. The higher ranked, Djokovic, confidently nudged
forward his straight set triumph.
In the year 2012, the right-hander Serbian professional faced his challenger in the third round of the Rogers Cup held at the hard courts of Toronto. He sustained his high graded performance and penned down his victory, 6-4, 6-4.
The 25-year-old American battled until the quarter-finals of the Paribas Masters. He encountered the Canadian challenger, Milos Raonic, giving him a straight sets upset but in the next round he lost at the hands of the Frenchman, Michael Llodra.
The right-hander Serbian professional attained 61 percent initial serve precision and thundered forward just eight aces. He double faulted three times; securing 45 of 57 first and 15 of 36 second serve points. On the other hand, the American right-hander
capitalized on 58 percent points, served 18 aces but double faulted five times. He converted 40 of 55 points.
