Biggest upsets of 2012 – Tommy Haas beats Roger Federer – Gerry Weber Open
German challenger, Tommy Haas, gave a straight sets defeat to the higher ranked Swiss professional, Roger Federer, in the final round of Gerry Weber Open, held at the green grass tournament of Halle.
The German professional won in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-4.
After a post match interview, Haas said, “I don’t have many words to say really, except that it is an amazing feeling to win another title in Germany. It’s probably up there if not the sweetest one considering the injuries, considering not knowing how much
longer it would really go or if I can actually get back. Then seeing how I played this week on grass here and beating Roger. To have somebody across the net like Roger is a real honour for me. To have that picture with the winning trophy and Roger next to
me is something really special. I’m just really happy and proud.”
The right-hander, Federer was expected to win the title at Halle for the sixth time in his career but became immobile in front of his opponent. The German senior gradually constructed his winning momentum and recovered the 3-1 deficit in the initial set.
In the second set, Haas cashed on his challenger’s serve in the ninth game and crumbled his competitor’s confidence.
Previously, in the year 2009, the local challenger secured his win against the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic. He struggled despite of his increasing age; he was able to put forward a strong battle against his rival.
The German participant was out of practice since February 2010 to May 2011, as he was undergoing a critical hip surgery. His world rankings considerably dropped as he was pushed beyond the world top 20 professionals.
The 34-year-old, Haas, drastically improved his performance in the French Open 2012 held at the clay courts of Roland Garros. He made a fantastic jump in the top 100 professional and skilfully clinched the world number 87. He successfully toured until the
third round as he was defeated at the hands of the local challenger, Richard Gasquet, in a four set thriller.
The duet had faced each other twice in 2009. He contested against the Swiss Maestro, Federer, in the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championship. He also faced him in the fourth round of the French Open, Federer consolidated his five set win after a tough
battle.
The wild card local entrant thundered across 61 percent initial serve precision with five aces and committed double faults three times. He converted 32 of 43 first and 17 of 27 second serve points. On the other hand, the Swiss number one, attained 69 percent
first serve accuracy, firing seven aces. He snatched away 42 of 58 points.
